Boncore Captures Senate Seat

By Phil Orlandella

Showing strength across the First Suffolk and Middlesex District which includes the North End/Waterfront community, attorney Joseph Boncore was elected State Senator in the April 12 special election.

Boncore will succeed former State Senator Anthony Petrucelli, who has taken a job in the private sector.

He led in his hometown of Winthrop picking up approximately 2,200 votes while securing 4,221 votes overall in a seven-person race.

Former Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo finished second overall with 3,681 votes. State Representative Jay Livingstone collected 2,872 votes, Lydia Edwards picked up 2,084 votes, Diane Hwang had 1,930 votes, Revere Councillor-at-Large Steve Morabito received 627 votes and Paul Rogers netted 173 votes.

There were no Republican candidates in the Senate race. That means Boncore will be unopposed in the general election scheduled for May 10. However, Boncore will have to seek re-election in the upcoming general election in the fall.

“Joe Boncore ran a tremendous grassroots campaign and it showed with his strong showing in the North End and throughout the district,” said Representative Aaron Michlewitz. “I look forward to working with Joe on the legislative issues that are important to us in the North End/Waterfront area.”
