City Sets New Affordable Housing Yearly Record

In the year 2015, Boston has set a new record for creating new units of affordable housing, permitted in a single year with the new number of 1,022 surpassing the old record of 862 and 2004.

With 19 percent of its housing units reserved to help house its low and moderate income residents, Boston’s sheer of affordable housing is higher than any other major city in the country, a number Mayor Martin J. Walsh and his Administration should be recognized and commended for.

Currently, the city houses an estimated 28,400 low-income households who need affordable housing. A projected affordable housing of approximately 38,200 units will be needed by 2030.

Thus far, it appears that Boston is at 107 percent of the target rate needed to create the 6,500 new units of affordable housing called for in the Mayor’s current plan.

If the 2015 figures continue to grow in 2016, the city will be on its way to meeting the Mayor’s targeted figure.
