The beginning of 2016, Massachusetts low-wage workers received their second consecutive annual raised when the State’s minimum wage rose from $9 to $10 per hour. A third $1 wage increase will occur in 2017 when the State will have the highest minimum wage in the country at $11 an hour.
House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Senate President Stanley Rosenberg spearheaded the legislation working closely with Raise Up Massachusetts, a coalition of more than 100 community organizations, religious groups and labor unions.
Approximately 450,000 workers will get to the $11 an hour figured with tipped workers getting $3.75 per hour up from $2.63 per hour.
The minimum wage legislation will help workers provide for themselves and their families and improve economical conditions for low-wage working people.
State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, whose district includes the North End, voted in favor of the legislation that will certainly help people make ends meet.
