Developers, Feingold Alexander and Associates, for the building of a new Eliot Innovation School started the a public
meeting off on the wrong foot when residents didn’t like the idea of work being done in the building including asbestos
removal without any notification to abutters or other residents.
A communications problem, that the firm claimed will not occur again. They did however, through local media, emails
and flyers get the word out about last week’s meeting in the Nazzaro Community Center, where they attempted to present
the major project from A to Z.
The meeting started off amid confusion as residents did not give the presenters time to finish a sentence without barking
off numerous questions. Eventually, the slide-presentation was allowed to continue uninterrupted with questions and
answers following.
The developers hope to start the new school project in a week or two with the gutting of the entire structure.
Construction will begin at 7am for twenty-three consecutive months.
During the work process, North Bennet Street, Salem Street and Tileston Street will be affected. Many parking spaces
will be lost during the duration of the project and there are no plans for displacement parking.
Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina told residents, “This is a long-term inconvenience major project that is going to
happen, and residents need to cooperate with the city and the developers to make this work in the best way possible.”
He added, “His staff as well as Representative Aaron Michlewitz and Senator Anthony Petrucelli staffs will be available to
work with the community on any and all issues of concern.”
A traffic plan (closures) has been developed and police details will be hired to enforce the system.
Jorge Mendoza, a lifelong resident and local businessman, who was part of the Eliot School team, echoed the
Councilor’s words saying, “We all need to cooperate with the construction of the school which we all supported.”
