Public Library Returns Fence to Blacksmith’s Family

Several years ago, (2007) an ornate iron fence surrounded the North End Library, 25 Parmenter Street.

During renovations of the library, the iron fence built by blacksmith George D’Addario and donated to the library was taken down to create garden space based on community input.

The fence was stored at the Central Library on Boylston Street.

Recently, the library was contacted by the D’Addario family and requested to have the fence returned to them in memory of the blacksmith.

Reportedly, the family will go to the library  in early August to reclaim the fence, which was not officially part of the Boston Public Library collection.

“It’s an honor to help reunite the D’Addario family with a piece of their history. Library’s help people research families and facts each day, but it is rare to be involved in producing such tangible results,” said Christine Schonhart, Director of Library Services, Branches.
