City Officials Explain New Trash Pickup Schedule Here

Residents were updated on the City’s plans to decrease the household trash pickup days from three to two.

Robert W. DeRosa, superintendent of Public Works Department (PWD) of the Waste Reduction Division and Frank O’Brien PR Administrative Assistant PWD Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services spoke at last week’s North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) monthly meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center.

They were joined by Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina who is attempting to get two Hockies year-round for the North End.

“If we get these Hockies. You’ll see the difference on how clean the streets will be,” he said.

Both DeRosa and O’Brien verified that the change was a financial move that will  significantly reduce the opportunity for spillage and rodents foraging. They also urged residents to place trash out on the morning of pickup, now Mondays and Fridays, rather than the night before at 5pm.

It was also noted that placing trash at street corners was illegal and no building or construction material should be put out for residential collection.

The City plans to prepare brochures fully explaining the change, post signage and placing ads in the local newspapers in advance of the start of the new policy that starts on

July 1 and will be in place for five years.
