Quality of life issues were the main topic at the June Boston Police North End Public Safety Committee monthly meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center.
Loud parties continue to be the key problem presented to police.
While police have made several arrests and fines were given to tenants, the problem continues according to the many residents that were in attendance.
Other disruptive issues and problems presented by residents included: people leaving local businesses and those adjacent to the community disturbing the peace during late evening and early morning, tenant smoking and drinking on fire escapes and/or rooftops, destruction of property by people reportedly intoxicated, using the neighborhood as a toilet and vomiting in doorways sidewalks and vehicles.
Several residents told police that responding officers did not handle several problems very well, noting a loud band and drinking in a local business where the owner had city permits.
City officials denied a permit was issued, so the party which was not a grand opening was allowed to continue.
Reportedly, the police did not ask to see the permit.
According to police, they had already broken up an underage drinking party at one of the local parks and will continue to monitor the situation.
A 30 day period report handed out at the meeting clearly indicated that crime in the North End has decreased.
The report showed there were no homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, auto thefts, larceny from a motor vehicle, graffiti and community disorder.
However, there was one aggravated assault, one breaking and entering and seven cases of larceny.
Police towed 19 vehicles, wrote 336 parking citations and handed out 117 motor vehicle violations.
Five arrests were made relating to a variety of domestic problems, stolen goods and one involving assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The next Public Safety monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, July 3 at 6:30pm.
