Council Supports Three Requests

Following the usual protocol and committee reports, candidates for the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) community elections held Saturday, May 17, had the opportunity to introduce themselves and speak for five minutes on issues relating to the area.

Suffolk County Register of Probate candidate John Sepulveda attended the NEWNC meeting and also provided a five-minute presentation.

Resident Parking/Traffic Committee chair Ryan Kenney reported that he has set up an appointment with the new Parking Commissioner to discuss community issues.

Public Safety Committee chair David Marx updated the information from the last of Boston Police Public Safety meeting.

He noted that the new District A-1 Commanding Officer and Community Services Sergeant were aware of quality of life issues facing the community and they will work with residents to hopefully correct the late night, early morning noise problems.

Nicole Leo of the Mayor’s Office reported that the Boston Shines/North End Chamber of Commerce cleanup was a success.

She also noted that parts of Hanover and Salem Streets have been power washed by the city and the lights and wiring on neighborhood streets will be removed on a Tuesday or Thursday street cleaning day.

In addition, Leo said the Mayor will hold a Coffee hour on Monday, June 2 from 9-10:30am in Columbus Park.

Boston Public Market, Parcel 7, representatives presented plans for the upcoming development which will contain 45 vendors selling Massachusetts and/or New England grown produce. The non-profit agency has raised about $9.2 million and has received a state grant of $4 million for the ground floor project.

Greg Chiodo, Assistant Location Manager for the movie “Black Mass” outlined the filming schedule and community notification, including parking.

Filming will take place on Margaret, Unity and Tileston Streets on Thursday, May 29 from 6am to 1 or 2am Friday morning.

Michael Pergola’s request to expand the existing head house at 26 Charter Street to create additional living space for his family was supported by the Council 9-0.

Pergola also receives support to redesign the current roof deck/balcony and to install an outdoor stairwell extending to a new roof deck. The roof deck 300 square feet is assessable by the owner only and fencing will be placed around the entire roof deck.

The Council also supported (8-1) by Saporo di Napoli/Rigoletto to install restaurant kitchen equipment for an eatery. They have worked things out with the abutters and hope to open mid-July.

Lastly, the Council supported (9-0) a request by Alex Vandermark to open “The Juicery” at 66A Cross Street the former location of DePasquale Pasta Shop. Only take out will take place at the new business which plans to operate 7 days a week from 6am-10pm. No outside seating has been requested.

The next NEWNC monthly meeting will be held on Monday, June 9 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center.
