Officials Support New Proposal for Government Center Garage

A major multi-million dollar development project on the outskirts of the North End neighborhood at the Government Center Garage has the support of the community’s elected officials.

State Senator Anthony Petruccelli, State Representative Aaron Michlewitz and Boston City Councilor Salvatore LaMattina have sent letters to the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) expressing their support for the project which will eventually rid the City of an unsightly facility and replace it with rental and condominium units, office space, retail businesses and a hotel.

The developer and/or his staff have held many meetings with individuals, elected officials, community and business groups to present the project plans and answer questions.

North End/Waterfront President Stephen Passacantilli has asked the developer to make a presentation at the community group’s September meeting and they have accepted.

“The Council and other residents would like to see the scope of the project and if it will have any impact on their community,” Passacantilli said.

The project includes a 600-foot office tower and a 400-foot residential tower are proposed, along with other buildings and a reconfiguration of the Haymarket bus terminal.

Two more buildings will be constructed in the Bulfinch Triangle, alongside the Avenir apartment buildings and the Victor apartment building now in construction.

Residential towers are also proposed behind North Station, along Nashua Street. One is proposed to be 400-feet tall and includes 507 residential units.
