City Funding Requested for Park Repairs

Excavation for new Tot Lot at DeFilippo Playground.

Several topics were discussed at the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association Parks and Open Spaces Committee monthly meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center.

Committee chair Ann Pistorio reported that the

Snow Hill Wall almost complete.

Snow Hill wall is finally completed and the City has started excavation for the new Tot Lot in DeFilippo playground which should be completed this spring.

Pistorio also noted that Copps Hill Cemetery has received additional funds to replace the decorative fence on the Charter Street side and possibly some repairs inside the cemetery.

Some members of the committee have met with City representatives to discuss potential project budgeted in next year’s capital budget.

It appears the committee’s two top priorities for the Gassy are drainage and lighting in the playground.

The City responded to requests to clean some graffiti off a couple of walls.

Members also discussed the continued use of the park for drugs use and constant use of the park for dogs to do their duty without pet owners picking up after them.

The rededication of the Paul Revere Mall (Prado) this spring raised some concerns about the badly needed repairs throughout the very busy public space located between the Old North Church and Saint Stephen’s Church.

The committee will attempt to set up a meeting and walk through of the Mall with Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina and a representative from the Parks Department to evaluate the current condition of the Mall in preparation for the spring rededication.

Among the issues that will be raised are drainage, trees and the general deterioration of the ground and walls.

The next committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 3 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street.
