Spazzare! Campaign Begins on April 30

-By Phil Orlandella

As expected, discussions at the NEWRA Clean Streets Committee meeting, centered around this Saturday’s (April 30) Spazzare! Community Awareness Campaign to keep the neighborhood clear of trash and debris.

The committee plans to officially open the campaign at the Prado at 8:45am and participate in Boston Shines annual North End clean-up program.

Brooms and dustpans will be placed on the 11 trash receptacles on Hanover Street by the City of Boston Department of Public Works. Signs promoting Spazzare! will also be placed on the receptacles.

The campaign is geared toward residents, businesses and possibly tourists using the equipment to help keep the sidewalks and curbs clutter free.

The promotion signs are a clear message to have people refrain from dropping papers, boxes, food and other things on North End streets.

Committee Chair David Grant who is spearheading the community endeavor pointed out on several occasions that “everyone has to be involved in order to have cleaner streets.”

Councilor Sal LaMattina is sponsoring coffee and donuts for Spazzare! and Boston Shines.

To register for Boston Shines log onto www.cityofboston.gov/ons/bostonshines.

Other items discussed at the meeting included rodent control and trash placement on the streets. The committee voted to present Lucca Restaurant and Bar on Hanover Street its Good Neighbor Award for helping to keep the North End streets and sidewalks clean on a continuous basis by clearing debris in front of the eatery.

The next Clean Streets Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 17 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street.
