A Look Back

Back in the 60s and 70s, the comb played an important role in the North End
as depicted by the two young men shown above. Being well groomed anddapper was the norm back in the good old days, especially on the North End’s main street, Hanover Street.

Every Sunday morning, the men of the North End used to line up in front of the local churches and cafes to get their shoes shined by local shoe shine boys. (photographs of Boston, by Jules Aarons from the Boston Library collection)
