NEWNC supports Brico’s expansion

The North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) pitched two 10-0 shut-outs at their recent monthly meeting at the Nazzaro Community Center.

Council members voted 10-0 to support a request by Frank DePasquale owner of the property at 241 Hanover Street to expand his restaurant, Brico’s into the newly purchased property formerly Nobile Insurance Agency.

The occupancy of the extended eatery is 54 seats making the total seating capacity of Brico’s 174.

While the hours of operation, 2am closure, will not change the owner plans to build a bar that will seat 12 patrons.

DePasquale employs approximately 400 to 450 people and will add another 30 staff when the expansion is completed.

Also by a 10-0 vote the Council approved a request by Laz Parking to make several improvements to the parking lot at 588 Commercial Street, adjacent to Langone Funeral Home.

Council members clearly specified that the plans submitted by Laz Parking would make an improvement to the area across the street from the Sterite Skating Rink.

The Council meeting was opened with a presentation by City of Boston Department of Public Works Joanne Massaro on her plans for mechanical street cleaning in the North End.

The original plan called for a year round cleaning program but a compromise was recently made to make the pilot program a 10-month project deleting January and February from the schedule.

Many residents were not pleased with either plan presented by the commissioner who stood her ground on the project. She advised residents that an evaluation of the cleaning program will be made in the spring.

Residents asked that they be involved first hand in the evaluation.

The next NEWNC monthly meeting will be held on Monday, December 13 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street.
