NEWRA Parks and Open Space Committee discussed several neighborhood items at last week’s monthly public meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center.
Agenda items included working with Boston Parks Advocates to discuss community input on 2011 initiatives and a possible map project currently underway.
BPA has neighborhood forums that provide valuable information on how to be pro-active when proposing improvements and/or changes to local parks and playgrounds, including improvements at DeFillippo Park on Prince Street.
The committee reported that the Parks Department will repair the wall on Snow Hill Street in the near future.
There were some positive feelings expressed regarding lighting, flooding and a new tot lot for the park.
Street furniture received its share of discussion. Residents noted there are simply too many tables, chairs, planters, signage boards and newspaper distributors on local sidewalks, many of them unpermitted.
Many residents felt it has become almost impossible to walk on sidewalks, especially on Hanover and Salem Streets.
The committee is attempting to put together a neighborhood map depicting historical sites, public parks and other open spaces available for viewing and locations of public facilities. The hope is to have the guide maps available for tourist season.
Ongoing research is taken place to verify that the Foster Street playground may have been the site of Paul Revere’s Bell Making business.
Because the Nazzaro Community Center will be used as a polling site, the NEWRA Parks and Open Space Committee monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 2 will be moved to the Mariners House in North Square.
